Chapter Fourteen

Rowdy

I’ve been at the clubhouse all day. Jude and Daisy have a doctor’s appointment for their twins, and the club has a shipment coming in. I don’t know where our VP is–Hayes, since Gus died–but when the prez says he needs a man to supervise, I say okay. I can’t stop thinking about Taylor, can’t stop wondering how her meeting with the principal went yesterday.

I should’ve called her instead of checking my phone every five minutes to see if she had texted. I should’ve been there for her in case something happened to her job and she needed a shoulder. But I wasn’t, and now, it’s too late.

The delivery guy unloads another crate at the back of the clubhouse and moves it into the storage area. He’s using an electric pallet jack, but I need to pay better attention. Something shady about this fucking guy.

As I resolve to pay better attention and stop thinking about Taylor, the door to the backroom swings open in a gush of chilly air from inside. I turn. “Adeline?”

“Have you seen Hayes?” I’ve seen eyes as wild with fear as hers. She’s on the edge where panic meets frantic.

“No.” He should’ve been at work, but if anyone would know that, it’s her, so I keep the information to myself. “Why? What’s up?”

Brothers help. No matter what. If Addie has a problem, Hayes has a problem. And that makes whatever it is my problem.

“I found a card on my windshield this morning.” She shakes her head and roots through her bag. “Here.”

It’s a plain white card. Inside, it says, You’re next.

“Oh, shit.”

If there’s something that will set Hayes off, it’s a threat to his family. But, for being a computer nut, he can handle himself. He walked into the Creed clubhouse and shot the place up in revenge for their murder of Gus. He killed a bunch of them, including Outlaw, the son of Tommy Grenada, who is now deceased, and Grenada’s batshit crazy ex, former FBI chick–Special Agent Ellen Burke.

Unfortunately, it’s also like Hayes to run off on his own and leap before he looks. He’s had a hair-trigger since Gus died–they were best friends–and a mad vendetta against the Creed. Although we all share that one.

“What did he say when he left?”

She shakes her head. “He didn’t say anything. Just got on his bike and tore out of there.” Her sigh shudders out. “I don’t know what to do. He’s going to get himself killed. That bitch will shoot him because of what he did.”

Obviously, she, too, thinks this is a warning from Burke. I’m the only one here, so the only one who can back him up. I don’t even have to ask where he was headed.

“How long?” I need to know how much of a head start he has.

“Half hour maybe? I thought he’d come here.” She shakes her head. “I should’ve known, but I thought he was over it.”

I don’t want to be the one to tell her, but it’s going to take a while before Hayes is over anything.
